Alba Iulia, known in german as Weißenburg or Carlsburg and in hungarian as Fejérvár and in the latin language as Apulum. It is a city, Alba county, and in 2002 recensămâtul 66,369 inhabitants were registered.

Medieval history
In 953 Hungarian Zsombor chief was baptized, taking the name Julius (Gyula). To distinguish "White Castle" in Transylvania from other cities of the same name (eg Royal White, Székesfehérvár that Belgrade Nándorfehérvár), Hungarians have called on city Mures "Gyulafehérvár", ie "White Castle of Gyula" (in the Hungarian Gyula). The name was translated into Latin - "Alba". This name is used today.
Between 1541 and 1600, the city became the capital of Transylvania Voivodship self for a short time was the capital first Romanian union of states, under the scepter of the great glorious Prince Michael the Brave. Alba Iulia was done to drive people Romanian people by the Grand National Assembly on 1 December 1918 which decided unite Transylvania and Banat with Romania. Alba Iulia in 1922 hosted the official ceremony of coronation of Kings Greater Romania, Ferdinand I and Maria I recunoascându thus of paramount historical importance and status of the soul of the Romanian people.
Contemporary History
On October 15, 1922, took place in Alba Iulia, the Reunification Cathedral, crowning of King Ferdinand and Queen Mary, the act symbolizing the union of all Romanian historical provinces of country, under the scepter of the same monarch.
On May 6, 1928 was organized by the National Peasant Party, in a broad campaign to topple the Liberal government, a meeting attended by about 100,000 citizens.
In 1933 the North Italian town of Alba Iulia Alessandria donated a copy of the "Statue Lupoaicei (" Capitoline Wolf "), as a sign of common Latin cultural heritage. On 13.04.2007 was held the official launch of "Market Allessandria" in Alba Iulia, which is placed the statue "Capitoline Wolf" as a symbol of brotherhood between Alba and Alessandria.
Modern History
In 1968, the city said the city, after paying Alba Iulia Romanian state has officially through Decree no. November 30, 1994 Title 26 of the city-symbol of the Great Union of Romanian. For these reasons, in Alba Iulia Romanian spirituality operates the Congress each year on or about December 1.
On December 1, 1990, Alba has celebrated the first National Day of Romania.
